Escape from Wormwood
content warning: blood, gore, destructive cults, cannibalism
(there are no jump scares)
ESCAPE FROM WORMWOOD is a horror visual novel where you get cut up and eaten by mouse cultists. it's based in the same world as Lonely Wolf Treat, but the story can be enjoyed as a standalone work. (enjoyed...? will people enjoy this?)
this game is a lot darker than my usual content (darker than Night with Timber imo) but i promise there's a happy ending. take care!

i almost crieddd
this was so good!! very dark, but a little bit of a happy ending. thanks so much nomnomnami :))
I know you probably don't read these comments, or at least you probably don't respond much if I recall your blog correctly, but I wanted to tell you how much I appreciate your work! Even something as dark as this always makes me feel better. I've loved your games since I was like 10 or 11 and they've really helped me through some awful times. Thank you so much! Even though I don't know you personally, you've made such a huge impact on me. Thank you, you give me hope for the future :)
aww wow i'm so happy to hear this! thank you for playing my games, i'm glad they had a positive impact on you!

man 😭😭❤️❤️
loam my goat :') you did NOT deserve that 💔
trick almost got killed :( who were they searching for? or is that in lwt?
That event happens in lwt
ohh god this hit so hard. little raindrop has a special place in my heart forever. my cult wasnt nearly as extreme as killing/eating people but i was still in a cult, and escaping took so long. the fear of not knowing what the world will do to you if you leave comes through so strongly it makes me wonder if the creator has also been in a cult honestly. oh my god i think i need to go cry over this actually. the ending montage of drop in the "outside world" oh my GOD. also the fear you feel when first questioning your religion/cult........... DROP MY BABY. even tho theyre probably older than me now.
i need to play more of nomnomnamis games... need more drop content... need it STAT...
ahmaze. Will replay. I’m weird.
aw this was so sad. i am so upset i didn't play this upon release though! I remember playing lonely wolf treat when I was maybe, 13/14 years of age? 5 years later I am still inlove with your type of work, played every single game that relates to the series of LWT. I heavily enjoyed NWT as of late, and the spinoff, and totally wanted more insight of this type of universe (least more of the horror side...) How could cute little critters be a part of something so much crueler??! It's always such a good way to spend my evening though, and I really adore how you can see the love for your games, and that creative writing oh my gosh. This one in specifics definitely gives me more of an idea what can occur in a universe such as this, no sunshine, and rainbows I knew but even darker? wow! Makes me feel for everyone involved... Sure maybe the dark tones isn't everyone's thing but I prefer it! But- halfway into this, I think I have a need to go play your fluffy games, and see with my own eyes how much I've missed! The yearn for horror in me holds me back from alot of things... T_T. I'll reward myself with a liiittle more romance, LWT had quite a bit of romance in itself but I am still so greedy as much as when I was a kid!!
I am left with mixed feelings now. That's it.
I just love all of this game....D: Awesome as always
Holy! I was actually shocked when the character that helped the "mouse" actually died, the story was so sad and wholesome lol! 10/10
im still in the middle of playing, but i've really been enjoying this so far!! i love that you can express a darker side of your world efurry nyaow and then :3
It's me - I'm one of the weirdos who absolutely enjoyed this game! Thanks for sharing it! I'm a huge fan of RPG Maker Horror games (and horror in general), so this one was right up my alley. I love all your comfy and cute stories too! I was delighted by how much I wanted Loam and Drop to have a good ending. Cult stories are always fascinating to me.
Great work as always, Nami!
You're my favorite creator!
I kinda predicted the game as soon as it started, but that didn't really matter to me. I'm actually glad I saw the outcome so quickly. It's a great game that ties up some questions I actually did have in the lonely wolf treat series about a certain side character who is just kind of there that you eventually forget about.
It's actually scarier than any other game I've played because the hyper cute characters with the imagery you used is more terrifying than realistic style horror games typically try to use. I happen to like all games with really cute design to the characters so it's a main reason I like all Nami's games. It was used in a very unique way in this game.
I prefer the cute stories with cute witches usually, but every now and then one like this is fine. I don't like to torture and kill the cute characters you make often. xD
I like how you don't hate the villain of this game despite the things they do because you know the outcome of their story before the origin.
Only makes me more sad that Lonely Wolf Treat only has 1 more game coming before the end. I wish it continued forever. I want the slice of life arc. xD
This was a bitter-sweet game, but I enjoyed it a lot. Your games are still a huge inspiration to me.
Hopefully one day, I'll be able to finish what I've started too.
Great work as always, Nom!
I really liked this game, it did make me cry quite a bit. But, I do have some notes, I guess, on certain parts of the story. This criticism will be pointed at Nami, as I think you probably do read the comments, and ultimately it's my thoughts. To anyone else reading, this stuff contains a spoilers, so take caution.
I'm not sure how to feel about Drop. She is described as a cult survivor in the extras, and as much as that is true, she does not act like one in my opinion. The two year jump and the montage at the end are pretty ambiguous in the journey that Drop followed after leaving the cult, but even then, her being pretty much fine looking at the time of Syrup 2 feels strange. The process of leaving a cult is, from what I know, very very difficult and takes a long time. To deprogram yourself from the rituals and life within a cult, to deal with all the depersonalisation, isolation, probably abuse and manipulation, it's a lot and requires professional help to even tackle. Drop also having to deal with her murdering people and eating them for her faith seems even worse.
I'm not super sure about how to tackle this criticism from your perspective. Drop saying something along the lines of "I have to go to therapy because of my childhood..." feels perhaps a bit too cheap? The only thing I can think of is making another, maybe unfortunately longer story about Drop's journey through her life after, as leaving is not the end of that. I'm not sure if you have the expertise to tell that story though, but if that's true, I'm not sure if telling the one you did makes much sense either.
My second problem is with the cult itself. The epilogue is strangely silly for a cult that at minimum in the past used to do ritual sacrifices. To frame the situation after Drop leaves as fine because there may not be another person to perform those sacrifices is, frankly, wrong. It's not only uncertain, but also it does not change the manipulation and abuse that a cult like that one asserts upon its members.
Another thing is the organization of the cult. Its members are describes as equal to each other, with no one in a higher position of power, except for their god, who is immaterial. This feels strange, as most cults, to my knowledge, are formed around a charismatic leader whom the rest of the members follow, still often with hierarchies of power within the members. It's not wrong to not have a fictional cult reflect this, but I think it may a way to make it feel like a more "light" cult, one that is less horrible, even though it is a cult and has been killing people. I feel this is why there is that dissonance in the epilogue, and in some way a reason as to why there even was an attempt as portraying them as silly.
Again, I'm not sure how to tackle this from your perspective. What I had been hoping would be at the end or in the epilogue was at least a hint at the cult being dismantled from the outside in some way. Unfortunately for us, under our systems, there aren't many examples of cults being dismantled, and even less of it being done with actual respect to the members, with the intent of helping them. Still, I think this is probably a way I'd take in the future. Just from a storytelling perspective, the other people from Wormwood deserve to be free and to be loved.
I really like Escape from Wormwood, and all of the word that you've built up through these game. I like how you mirror real world issues within your worlds and how respectful you are to everyone involved. Some things within this game, being in that universe, don't sit right with me. I hope you read this and I hope that I was respectful toward you.
Bonus point that touches on the world of LWT and such, I find it strange that you focus on systemic problems without really addressing the underlying systems in your world. Like, to my knowledge there hasn't been a mention of any government in the games. Not at a national lever (if there are even nations), or at a city level, there is only a mention of police. I am not quite sure how your world operates, but still, it feels weird to ignore the systemic part of oppression, and make it more cultural I guess? It's much more complex to portray that, but also I think it is in some way necessary. Anyway, love your games, they're awesome!
absolutely agree about the cult power structure not making sense and the lack of explained government beyond "witches". put it better than i could
i did love love love this game but yes the epilogue was. very very tone deaf. i visibly cringed reading it lol.
also YES as a "cult survivor" (feels so unserious to call myself that but its technically correct) the levels of organization are SO IMPORTANT!!!!! i remember always holding a degree of fear for the prophet (the highest level) because he could say that god said anything and we couldnt confirm or deny, just kinda go with it? yeah i was never a very good member of that cult lol. (avoiding saying the name because im nervous gulp!)
im really not adding anything of value here im just saying "yes i agree" hehe
hey guys, thanks for all the feedback on this. i went ahead and removed the epilogue from the game since it was bumming me out that people were getting bummed out by reading it. you can consider it to not be canon now haha
[UPDATE] I posted a full-playthrough version for people who prefer that. :3 thanks again for the amazing game! I hope my vids can help bring some well deserved attention to it. <3
THANK YOU NOMNOMNAMI FOR TRANSLATING INTO PORTUGUESE, WE BRAZILIANS LOVE YOU (amamos você tambem fah braccini)
the cult in the game reminds me of the real life Androphagi tribal group they used to dominate most of Ukraine and the name translates to men eaters makes me think how it would be to be one of them
Put this game off for a bit as it didn't seem that interesting. Oh my God. How wrong I was. Nami, please never stop making visual novels you are truly my favourite creator.
Random thought: S.T.O.P. the sun by And One reminds me of this game so much and idk why but I'm loving it!!
I was really excited when this came out, since I had wanted to learn more about the cult after getting a glimpse of them, and it met all of my expectations and more. Just very delightful in the heart it shows as always, even setting the visceral parts aside, which were also very interesting. A lovely game all around. :3
Made a video
Okay, so, I kinda find it similar to the story from children of the corn, althought it was pretty simple I really liked it and I suppose that I really like Loam (his pragmatism kills me ngl), great project
Always nice to see a new game by NomNomNami it's also really neat that the darker aspects the Nami universe are being explored, and not just subtly implied. I hope Nami releases more dark games like this. Although I do also hope she eventually finishes the LWT series, since those games are a blast too.
i didnt cry about this game idk if im just stonehearted i just felt vaguely depressed. i did cry about her tears were my light if u havent go try it
good girl little raindrop even it little too late but still okay lucky for Trick.
I really enjoyed playing this game.... Pretty short but still nice too! Ending were strong that it's almost made me cry! 10 cheese/10
OMG THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE SCARY BUT I SPENT MY DAY CRYING HEAVILY INSTEAD (╥﹏╥)
this wasnt really scary tbh. it was just kind of gorey, but ive watched a movie that had a LOT of gore so even that isnt scary
OH MY GOD I LOVE IT
its really sweet in a bloody sort of way and i want the best for drop
that's my daugher right there i was just thinking about how i could help he escap instead of how loam could survive T0T
hey at least we got her to save people and change her ways!... i say as i cry while balling up on the floor
i dont know how i did this in one sitting as i almost had a panic attack but i push throug
The witch knows magic but cant get out of some rope?
well she probably needs her hands to do magic, and its probably hard to do magic when u were knocked out for i don't know how many days straight and are bleeding and literally probably going to die.
Most Witches specialize in single forms of magic. Peat is a photographer, she specializes in creating images. She probably doesn't know very much other magic and it wouldn't make sense to expect her to.
why is everything you make always so goood!!?
this is amazing!
Yes
im crying so hard- thats my daughter i wish i could adopt her
